![]() ![]() We were in his basement, leaning against his workbench, about to look over an old but new-to-him Purdey O/U. #What age is my beretta shotgun for freeSUBSCRIBE to the AUDIO VERSION for FREE Google | Apple | Spotify So what happened? Where did all of today’s O/Us come from? Compared to side-by-sides, are they any better? Or are over-unders just-you’ll die if it’s true- fashionable? Back then, over-unders were around, but they were scarcer than ruffed grouse are today in New Jersey. Others, like an extra-finish pigeon gun from James Purdey & Sons, cost more than a new house. Some cost less than a good week’s wage, like the Belgian-made “Highly Engraved Diana Style Breech Shotguns” sold by Sears. As one gunmaker told me in 2019, “the side-by-side is dead.”Ī hundred years ago, side-by-sides were built by hundreds of makers. In the grouse woods, on skeet fields, and across sporting-clay courses, if you’re shooting a double, you’re shooting an O/U. Today, a few are around but compared to over-unders, the total numbers hardly matter. In fact, O/Us are so popular that until about a decade ago, new, affordable side-by-sides ceased to be sold in the United States. ![]() For several decades now, the over-under has been the double-barrel for us to carry. We have hip gadgets (Garmin fēnix watches), trendy dogs ( Wirehaired Pointing Griffons), and fads (34-inch barrels). Like any group, we have things that are in ( Gunner Kennels), things that are out (beeper collars), and things that were out but are now kind of in (smoking a pipe-I guess). For us, fashion is a four-letter word and as appealing as watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians.īut that doesn’t mean we’re immune to fashion-like whims. ![]() Don't even consider purchasing a Beretta shotgun without first checking out the extensive inventory of "in stock" firearms at Joel Etchen. The rise of the over-under and a history lesson in fashionable shotgunsĭo you think of yourself as fashionable? Probably not, and most of the bird hunters I know would agree with you. The purchasing experience, customer service and product are all exemplary. Very seldom do I write positive reviews and never have I written one of this length, however this time it is certainly warranted. It has the Beretta logo embossed into the front, three combination locks and is thin and sleek. BTW: the Beretta case in which it is delivered is very nice and highly underrated. Perfect!! I will be shooting it for the first time tomorrow. When I went to my local FFL to pick it up, the shotgun aesthetics were in perfect condition. The tracking number made the anticipation even greater and fun. Matt informed me that Joel Etchen firearms are checked upon arrival to the store and again prior to shipping. I asked him to inspect the gun thoroughly for me prior to shipping. It was great! It made my choice much easier to make. Matt then took numerous photographs of the guns and e-mailed them to me. He recommended that I go with my #1 choice due to the high quality of the wood and it's beautiful myriad of color. After talking to Matt about the three shotguns I had narrowed my search to, I identified to him the features in the wooden stock and forend that I find attractive. This is where Matt's assistance sealed the deal. This is the biggest purchase of a nonessential item I have ever made. I live across the country and had my apprehension about making such a large purchase online without actually being able to see the product in person. My experience purchasing a Beretta Silver Pigeon III was great from introduction to delivery. ![]()
